MSCW/MADS
SPRING DRIVER’S SCHOOL AT VIR, May 20-21, 2000
|
|
|
BRMC
Members lined up with their cars in the North Paddock of Virginia
International Raceway for the Spring MADS event (Left-to-Right):
Joe and Elizabeth Barnette (’95 ), Connie Shealor (’95 M), President
Roger Huffman (‘91B – Nice Shine!), and John Kuykendall (’95 R,
I’m behind the camera). Also attending, but not shown, were Gordon
Miller (’99 Sport) and Tom Oddo (’95 M).

Another
shot showing Joel, Elizabeth and Connie (and Roger with his head in
the trunk). John Kuykendall’s Red R-package with hardtop and tire
trailer, ready to attack the track and autocross pad. Some other attending
Miatae in the background. The MADS event put on by the Mazda Sportscar
Club of Washington, included a car show, autocross, on-track driver’s
education, technical sessions and door prize giveaways. Several Mazda
and Miata vendors were present to sell their goodies. |

A
long shot showing the very nice and large North Course Paddock area,
and some other MADS particants. The MSCW event attracted many RX7’s
and Miata from all over the east coast, as the West Penn RX7 club
banner indicates. The red barn-like structure in the background is
the Starter’s tower and Administration Building located along the
front straightaway. |

An
in-car shot during the "Parade Laps" held at lunch, following
an RX7 Twin-Turbo into the braking zone before Turn #1, at the end
of the long main straight. I’m just about to pass him under hard braking
(yeah, right!). |
| |
|
|
 |
|
Artistic
mirror shot of Roger Huffman (with Glenn Thompson, BRRSCCA Regional
Exec. riding shotgun) following me too closely (objects in mirror
are closer than they appear!) during the parade laps. I understand
that Roger was trying to pass me on the inside using a "creative"
line, but I shut the door on him! |
| |
|
|
 |
|
Coming
into the sharp, uphill Turn #11 (or was it #10?), which leads into
the esses at the top of the hill. Still trying to pass that RX7! I’ll
get him on the straight (yeah, sure!). Seriously, the RX7 TT’s were
awesome, but the Miata’s were surprisingly capable of keeping up in
the twisty sections! |
| |
|
|
 |
|
MSCW
arranged for a group photo session on course, at the end of our parade
laps. Shown is Connie Shealor in her ’95 M. Nice Sunburst Yellow Miata,
too! Look for the group picture on the MSCW site (http://www.mscw.com),
when they get around to putting it up. |
| |
|
|
 |
|
Another
view of the group shot underway. Note all of the RX7 TT’s with their
hoods up. Those bad boys run very hot at the track. Miata’s always
seem to run cool – score one for the Miata’s! |
| |
|
|
 |
|
Yet
another shot of the photo session festivities. William Kuykendall
is in the middle of the shoot, trying to hide his identity (white
t-shirt, khaki shorts – we know who you are!). The group included
a nice mix of tricked-out Miata and RX7’s of all vintages. |

A
track map of the new VIR North Course. MSCW plans to run the entire
3+ mile course (North and South combined) at their fall MADS event
September 2-3, 2000. Be there, or be, uh, slow! |
