Minutes

Here are some notes from the January 15, 2002, Blue Ridge Miata Club meeting for those who were unable to attend. If anyone sees something that needs added/corrected, please let me know.

Attendees

The following people attended the meeting, which began at 6:30 PM at Vincents Ristorante in Blacksburg, VA:

  • Joel Barnette
  • Roger Huffman
  • Anne Kuykendall
  • John Kuykendall
  • Sarah Liddle
  • Barbara Martin
  • Larry Martin
  • Kathryn Oddo
  • Tom Oddo
  • Greer Reichow
  • Jonathan Shewbridge
  • Tammy Shewbridge
  • Edward Von Saher

Great Food and a "Timely" Door Prize to Boot

As John Kuykendall mentioned in a previous post, Tom Oddo was quite a host to the club. The food was great! And, as John also mentioned, Tom contributed a Door Prize wristwatch, from Duncan Mazda, which Anne Kuykendall won. Note: John, I didn't intend to "plagiarize" your post--it looks like we both had similar ideas, and you got to the web quicker than I did.

If you plan to go to the Blacksburg/Christiansburg area, be sure to sample the Tom's cuisine. You won't be disappointed. Here is some contact information:

    Vincents Ristorante
    1200 S Main St.
    Blacksburg, VA 24060
    (540) 552-9000

By the way, when you see Tom at the next club meeting, ask to see his other wristwatch (made in the shape of Mazda rotor and a rotor housing). It's very unique.

New Meeting Location Rotation

The club will be trying a new meeting location rotation between the four major areas of membership. The meeting night is still tentatively scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month, but it can be moved to a different evening or to the weekend, if there is enough club interest in changing it. Currently, the rotation is scheduled as follows:

  • January: Blacksburg
  • February: Lynchburg
  • March: Danville
  • April: Roanoke

Event Ideas

The club discussed several ideas for upcoming events, including:

  • Tech(nical) Day (Possibly in Roanoke; possibly in February or March)
  • Maple Festival (North of Greenbrier)
  • D-Day Memorial (Bedford)
  • Cuz's Restaurant (Tazewell County)
  • A Road Trip to Performance Buyers Club (Fairfax area)
  • Black Dog Jazz Festival (Chateau Morrisette)
  • Mustang Car Show (Roanoke area--Larry Martin said that there will be a separate section in the show for Miatas)
  • Virginia Transportation Museum (Roanoke--the museum is making a special push to spotlight automobile transportation this year; Larry Martin has details)
  • Independence Day Parade (Salem or Shawsville)
  • Deals Gap (North Carolina: last year's web page)
  • Virginia Tech Parade (Blacksburg, October 12)
  • 3rd Annual Miatas in the Blue Ridge (October 19)--Larry Martin wants to get this event ready early so that the club can start advertising a few months in advance

If you have questions about (or additional ideas for) events, please contact one of the following club members:

  • Sarah Liddle
  • Larry Martin
  • Roger Huffman

You can find their e-mail addresses on the Members page. A "side meeting" may be scheduled in February for additional event planning.

Open Discussion

Speakers for a club meeting

  • If there is interest, the club could bring in a special speaker for a club meeting on occasion
  • Greer Reichow is agreeable to speaking to the club on behalf of Performance Buyers Club
  • Does anyone have any additional ideas for speakers? If so, please contact Roger Huffman.

Newsletter

  • There has been interest in the past for a club newsletter
  • Unfortunately, no one has expressed interest in composing the newsletter
  • The work required for creating a newsletter can be spread across several people so that no one person is overworked by it
  • If you have good writing skills and would like to see the club start a newsletter (possibly on a quarterly basis) please contact Roger Huffman or Jonathan Shewbridge

Club Officers:

  • President: Roger Huffman
  • Treasurer: Nancy Behrens
  • Event Coordinators: Sarah Liddle and Larry Martin

Regional Representatives:

  • Danville: Jeff Dodson
  • Lynchburg: Heath Steadman
  • New River Valley: James Briggs
  • Roanoke: Roger Huffman

The meeting adjourned around 9:30 PM.
